Safely using epoxy
Epoxy gives your boat it's strength and durability, but it requires care in it's use. People who are sloppy working with it and get it on their skin can develop an allergic reaction to it and become sensitized. Here are some rules that will make working with epoxy much safer;
- The most important rule is to read and follow any printed material that comes with your epoxy, especially any
safety and handling information that may be on the cans.
- Work clean . Wear gloves ALL THE TIME and old clothes whenever you can.
- ALWAYS wear a dust mask when mixing fillers and sanding.
- In hot weather the epoxy mixture can generate lots of heat when it cures.
Try not to hold it in your hand, because the heat from your hand will make it
cure that much quicker. Throw the used mixing cups away where they won't
start a fire
- If you should accidentally get epoxy on your skin, wash it off immediately with the cleaner
specified by the epoxy manufacturer. Once again, work clean.
- Be careful where you put anything that has epoxy on it, including used
stirring sticks and brushes. They will stick to ANYTHING!
