Epoxy and painting supplies
These epoxy and painting supplies are needed if you're cutting your own parts or building from a kit. If you think you will be using epoxy again for other projects, buy the fillers in larger sizes; you'll save money.
- 5 yards of 6 oz. fiberglass cloth, 38" wide. This is enough to cover the garboards
on the outside, and will leave enough to cut 4" strips for the outside stems and
the inside keel seam.
- A gallon size epoxy kit. I have developed a preference for W.E.S.T. System epoxy
over the years, but many builders are using M.A.S. epoxy with excellent results.
Each company sells the supplies that you will need, and have distributors all over
the country. Be sure to get the pumps that meter the resin
and hardener in the proper ratio. You will also need the following supplies:
- a small (6 oz.) container of colloidal silica or milled fibers to make a gluing mixture
- a 2 oz. can of WEST Microlight filler
- a 5 oz. can of WEST Low-Density filler.
- two disposable plastic syringes
- four more plastic stringes or four empty caulking gun tubes depending on which injecting method you use
- 20 pairs of latex gloves
- 10 small disposable brushes
- 3 plastic auto body putty squeegees
- 4 plastic mixing cups
- 6 1 1/2" chip brushes
- 4 WEST system 7" foam roller covers

- one quart of primer
- two quarts of finish paint of your color choice. Make sure it is suitable for use over epoxy
- a glossy interior is hard on your eyes, so I usually add some of the flattening agent that the paint manufacturer recommends to the paint on the interior of the boat
- six foam roller covers
- several (1") and (2") paint brushes
- two tack clothes
