Using your boat

    Small boats like the QuickLap canoe are fun to build and use, but like all boats they require some thought. Don't get into any small boat when it is on dry land unless you are SURE that it is well supported, and that there isn't anything under it that might punch a hole in it. When you are storing your boat outside, turn it upside down so that rain will run off. Check over your boat and paddle thoroughly before each use to make sure they are safe; if you see any spots that need repairs or repainting, fix them before they get too bad. Know how to tie a few basic knots; a bowline to make a loop, a clove hitch to tie your boat to a piling, a square knot to tie two pieces of line together, and a figure eight knot for a stopper.

    If you should capsize or have a problem while out in your boat, one of the most important safety rules is to STAY WITH THE BOAT . Even when full of water it will float, and you will be much easier to find if you are with your canoe. ALWAYS wear a life jacket whenever you are on the water, and take a whistle or other noisemaker with you. Don't overload your boat with people or gear. Your canoe has a weight capacity of 225 lbs. If you have friends that wants to go out with you, help them build boats for themselves.

    Stay away from any boat bigger than yours. You may think you have the right of way ( and you might! ), but don't push it. Your small boat is much more maneuverable than most bigger boats, so stay clear. If you're in a situation where you have to be among larger boats, make sure that they can see you. Wave your paddle in the air, flash a light, or blow your whistle.

    Most small recreational boats are designed for use in sheltered water; they are not usually rough water boats. Be aware of your surroundings, and especially the weather. In the spring and summer, thunderstorms can pop up quickly, and you are vulnerable in any small boat. Head for shore as soon as you see the weather turning bad.

One thing is most important; use your boat and enjoy it. People will be impressed that you built it, so show it off.
